As you may know, the Green Team has been in the process of installing programmable thermostats throughout the church in an effort to reduce our energy use and lessen our impact on God's creation.  We are beginning to see the results of our efforts and are encouraged by the impact that one idea can have.  We are also encouraging everyone to find ways at home to reduce consumption and energy use.

One of the biggest users of energy in our homes is the HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system.  The efficiency of these systems is determined by the SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) standard.  In January of 2006 the minimum SEER standard for new systems was raised from 10 to 13.  A SEER rating of 13 is 8% more efficient than a 12 SEER and 30% more energy efficient than the previous 10 SEER standard.   This is good news.  But even better is a program currently in place that offers a federal tax credit of up to $1500 for newly installed systems that meet either 14 or 16 SEER, depending on the type of system being installed.  This program, which continues through the end of 2010, offers incentives for a variety of energy-efficient home improvements including doors, windows, insulation, roofing and water heaters.  If you find yourself needing to replace or upgrade any of these systems or components, this is an opportunity to save money, save energy, and reduce your carbon footprint.

If we all implemented just one idea - big or small - we would realize the inherent power that we have to make a difference.  The Green Team is committed to the moral responsibility we have to care for this world that God has given us.
